JAZZ . . . and other obsessions

Welcome to Bruce Crowther's Website

Updated October 2011

Writing credits include about 30 books (fiction and non-fiction), several magazine articles, some short stories, a few television screenplays (a long time ago), and a stage play (fairly recently). There are also hundreds of record reviews and thousands of encyclopædia entries.

About half the books are crime fiction; most of the rest are divided between jazz and popular cinema.

The jazz books include a biography of Gene Krupa and books on jazz singing and big band music.

Other non-fiction books include biographies of film actors, including Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum and Michelle Pfeiffer, as well as studies of myth & reality in the movies, film noir, prison movies and a history of television comedy.

Also on this website you will find:

- interviews with leading jazz artists of today, singer René Marie, pianist David Hazeltine and tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin.

- appraisals of some jazz artists of the past who although gone are not forgotten by many fans. Brief assessments of lives and careers feature Pete Brown, Don Byas, Ernie Caceres, Paul Gonsalves, Sonny Greer, Pete Johnson, Ike Quebec, Zutty Singleton, Tab Smith, Eddie South, Dave Tough and Cootie Williams. Longer pieces look at two distinguished artists: Betty Carter and Benny Carter.

Also, there is a short story, Been Here And Gone, inspired by blues singer Jimmy Rushing.

- two other short stories ... both previously unpublished, that have nothing to do with jazz. The first, Take Three Girls, is a tale of revenge - or is it? The second, What's In A Name, is about alienation and sudden, bloody death and reveals how easy it is to unwittingly cause devastating damage to those we claim to love ...

Other pages on this site include:

- links to interesting and useful jazz sites ... also sites on subjects that have taken my fancy and might take yours ...

- CD Reviews - Mostly, these are reviews of CDs by jazz artists - grouped alphabetically:  A - L and M - Z.

Before any of that, the next page lists all published books (as Bruce Crowther and under pen names), complete with ISBN numbers.
