JAZZ . . . and other obsessions - Bruce Crowther's Website

The drawings, paintings, and photographs, mainly of jazz subjects and mostly by Bruce Crowther, that were previously shown here, are temporarily off the screen for technical reasons. Hopefully, these images will be back one day soon (-ish).

For me, drawing and painting is merely a relaxation from writing and I have boundless admiration for those for whom painting is central to their lives and careers.

Among artists whose work I admire are three in particular. I have been fortunate enough to meet the first two, Briggs and Kukkonen, at their respective studios. They are very different from one another in style and subject matter, as is the multi-talented D'Ambrosio.

All three have my respect and admiration.

An American based in Nashville, Bill Briggs's studio looks out over the Cumberland River. His inspiration comes from many things, including the musical history of Tennessee.

A Finn who lived and worked in Málaga for many years, Heikki Kukkonen is now back in Finland. His inspiration stems from powerful and dramatic images of everyday images of Spain and his homeland.

Singer-songwriter Meredith D'Ambrosio's paintings sometimes appear on her album covers. She is inspired by many things, notably rural and small-town America.

My website was designed and built by myself. Unfortunately, I am pretty dumb when it comes to computer-ese, which accounts for the fact that this site is extremely basic. I had help and advice from a friend, Steve Walker, who should not be blamed for any hiccups, most of which result because I did not listen carefully enough, and most certainly not for the site's primitivism. Steve's own site is technically much, much better. During the past couple of years, Steve has spent most of his time in Brazil. Some of his experiences there are recounted in fascinating detail on his blog: http://www.swalk.eu/
